This healing foot cream has been a recipe that I’ve been using for at least the last four years. My Mom has also a been beneficiary of this recipe, as I knew she would be able to put it to the ultimate test. As long as I can remember, she has been experimenting with different store-bought moisturizers, trying to find something that would help with cracks in her heels. When I first came across a variation of this recipe, one of its promises was to help with extremely dry, cracked feet. Reading that gave me enough incentive to purchase the ingredients I didn’t have, and to give it a try.
Pretty much every year around this time I whip up a batch of healing foot cream for Mother’s Day. My Mom, who was fairly new to my essential oil and homemade concoctions at the time I first tried this recipe, obliged to give it a try. The fact that I’m still making regular batches of this recipe says it all — it really is a great, healing foot cream that will help with extremely dry, cracked heels.
One of my favourite ways to treat my feet is by first letting them soak in a basin of water (I’ll add 1/2 cup epsom salts and 5 drops of Peppermint essential oil) for 20 minutes or so. Next, I’ll use an exfoliating pumice stone around the rough edges of my heels, and sides of my feet. After using the pumice stone, I will rinse my feet, and apply this cream. I always keep a pair of cozy, aloe-infused socks nearby, so I can slip them over my feet, allowing the cream to have time to absorb into my feet. This little “Sweet Feet” treatment I do a couple times a year always makes me feel as though my feet have just been to the spa. It really is a nice treat, and pretty rewarding too, as I have made all the products being used. It’s not only less expensive than the spa, but I can also be confident in the products I’ve used on my skin.
There is one down-side to this recipe, and I do want to point it out, because for some people it will come as a surprise and possible disappointment. This cream will leave your feet fairly “oily” as it does not absorb into the skin very quickly, so you either need to use extremely small amounts of it, or be ready to put socks on after applying it. I opt for the socks, unless I’m applying it in bed and about to go to sleep. A really cozy pair of aloe infused socks really does pair well, but any socks will do!
NOURISHING FOOT CREAM
[ Makes approximately 8 oz of cream ]
INGREDIENTS:
- 1/2 cup shea butter
- 1/4 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup jojoba oil
- 15 drops Purification* (a Young Living blend of essential oils)
- 5-10 drops Grapefruit
- 5-10 drops Tea Tree (Melaleuca Alt.)
- 15 drops Frankincense
- 15 drops Orange
- 5-10 drops Lemon
DIRECTIONS:
- Melt first 3 ingredients in the double broiler (I personally use a glass bowl, placed on top of a pot of simmering water).
- Once all ingredients have melted into one another, remove from heat.
- Place the mixture into the fridge for a couple of hours to let it re-set (you can speed this up by putting it into the freezer, just be careful not to leave it too long, or it will get rock hard!).
- Add in essential oils and whip together (food processor, hand blender or just with a fork would work too!)
* Purification is a proprietary blend which includes the following essential oils: citronella, rosemary, lemongrass, tea tree, lavandin, and myrtle.
